A

ACADEMIC DISHONESTY

Academic dishonesty, which includes plagiarism and cheating, undermines the school's mission and the student's educational process. Plagiarism is willfully copying another's work or ideas and taking credit as own (e.g., student papers, tests, published work, etc.). Cheating includes falsifying records or documents or providing one's own work to be copied by another. Students found to have engaged in academic dishonesty at CHS will receive the following consequences:

1. The first documented offense will result in loss of credit for the assignment.

2. The second documented offense will result in loss of credit for the course.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

A daily bulletin is distributed to each teacher as well as posted in a variety of locations. Listen carefully to each day's announcements for information about club meetings, sporting events, or other important news that will help you make the most of your high school days. All bulletin announcements must be turned into the office by 1:30PM and must be signed by an advisor

ASSEMBLIES

Assemblies are a valuable part of our educational program here at Columbia High School. A variety of assemblies are provided to complement our academic and activity program. The student council selects assemblies. Students are required to attend all assemblies. Students may not leave campus.

All assemblies will begin with the pledge of allegiance. Students not reciting the pledge shall maintain a respectful silence. RCW 28A.230.140

The key to a successful assembly is student behavior. You are expected to be attentive and courteous during an assembly or presentation. Remember, your behavior not only reflects on you, but also on your school.

ATHLETIC ELIGIBILITY

In order to maintain athletic eligibility during the current quarter grading period, the student shall maintain passing grades in a minimum of four (4) full-time subjects in High School. Students must maintain a 2.00 G.P.A (Grade Point Average) and have no F's in any of his/her classes. Students not maintaining the minimum G.P.A. will be on academic probation for five (5) weeks, with monitoring by the Athletic Director. If the G.P.A. has not met minimum standards after five (5) weeks the student athlete will not be allowed to participate until the minimum G.P.A. of 2.00 is accomplished at the start of the next grading period. Student athletes can only be on probation one (1) time during a two-year period.
B
BLATANT SKIP
If your child has a blatant skip from school (i.e.. forging a note, leaving school grounds without permission, etc.) he/she will automatically face detention or in-school suspension equal to the amount of time skipped plus penalty.
C
CAFETERIA
We serve everything from a full course meal to a la carte items in our lunch area. You can pay for meals either with cash or by tickets, which can be purchased in the front office. Tickets can be purchased for one week or more.

We also have free and reduced price lunches for students from families whose income is below the level established by the federal government. Forms are available in the main office. Questions concerning this program should be directed to our lunch program supervisor at 493-3368 EXT 212.

CANINE SEARCH

For the safety of students and staff, random drug searches will occur throughout the school year using specially trained drug sniffing dogs. These animals will be used to conduct periodic searches of student lockers and vehicle parking areas.

CLASS SCHEDULING

Students meet with their counselors during the year to choose their courses for the upcoming school year. Any changes to these schedules should be made through the counselor during registration.
Schedule changes are approved only after you consult with the counselor, teacher and parents. Changes after the second week of classes are permitted only with recommendation of their teacher.

CLOSED CAMPUS

Columbia High School is a closed campus and all students are required to remain on the school grounds all day unless officially excused. Students may leave school on an approved school function and during their lunch break. The freshman class is not allowed to leave campus during their lunch break unless their parents accompany them and they must sign out in the office prior to leaving school.
All students leaving school must sign out in the office unless they are leaving on an approved school function or during their lunch break. Students signing out of school will be required to have a note excusing them from school prior to signing out. When students re-enter school they must also sign in the office. Leaving school without permission and/or not signing out will result in disciplinary action. There are provisions in the office to accommodate students who wish to go home because of illness. If you become ill during school, come to the office. You may not leave during school hours without permission.

COMPUTER, NETWORK AND INTERNET USE

Users are responsible for good behavior on school computer networks just as they are in a classroom or school hallway. General school rules for behavior and communications apply.
Users are required to have a signed Acceptable Use Policy on file at CHS.

COUNSELORS

School counselors serve all of our students. Whether a student's needs are academic, career, or personal in nature, all students should feel free to contact their school counselors for assistance.
Academic and career planning should start when you enter Columbia High School. With the help of your parents and the school counselor, you should plan your class schedule based upon your goals. We have a career information center in the counseling center located in the Cain Memorial Room in the library. The counselor is available by appointment to assist in obtaining any career information.

D

DRESS CODE

School is preparation for the job market. Dress as you would be required to dress in an informal job setting.

  1. Students must be dressed in a manner that is not unhealthy, distracting or offensive to other students and/or staff. For these reasons, very short shorts and very bare tops, which may reveal the undergarment, are not appropriate for school.
  2. In certain situations dress will be prescribed for safety (in shop, for example).
  3. Shoes and shirts must be worn.
  4. In keeping with our "no use" message, no articles of clothing or accessories shall be worn depicting any drug or alcohol, or drug or alcohol paraphernalia or message.
  5. Obscene representations of any kind are not acceptable dress.

DRIVER EDUCATION

Driver Education classes will be offered first and second semesters and summers at 7:00 a.m. Students must be 15 at the time of enrollment. This fee is not refundable after the student has been scheduled for five hours of instruction. If an injury, illness, or other approved situation forces a student to withdraw from the class, arrangements may be made with the TSE teacher and school on a case-by-case basis for the student to complete the course at a later time.
The fees for Driver's Education are:
  1. $145.00 for the course
  2. $75.00 for students on free and reduced lunch programs
  3. $75.00 for extension of the course

G
GANG AFFILIATION/ACTIVITY

The White Salmon Valley School District is committed to maintain a school environment that is safe for students, personnel, and patrons, and to ensure an optimum learning environment. Gangs and gang related activities disrupt the orderly operation of the schools and inhibits/detracts from a school setting that is conducive to learning.

Organization, groups, or individuals, which initiate or advocate activities which threaten the safety and well being of persons or property on school facilities or at school sponsored events are detrimental to the educational purpose of the White Salmon Valley School District and will not be tolerated. Students involved in such activities are subject to suspension or expulsion.

The use of hand signals, and the presence of any apparel, jewelry, accessory, book, graffiti, manner of dress, or manner of grooming which by virtue of its color, arrangement, trademark, symbol or any other attribute denotes membership in such a group creates a clear and present danger on school premises or at school sponsored events, and/or the substantial disruption of the orderly operation of the schools. Symbols of gang affiliation are prohibited and students involved are subject to suspension or expulsion.

The White Salmon School District further prohibits activities that promote recruiting, initiation, hazing, intimidation, assaulting, and/or related activities to gang affiliation. Students who sponsor or participate in such activities shall be suspended or expelled.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

Columbia High School operates on a four-period day, making it possible for students to earn a full credit for each semester course, for a total of 8 credits in one academic year. The school district policy now states that a student must meet all graduation requirements prior to graduation or they will not be allowed to walk in the graduation ceremony, attend the senior trip, and project graduation.

I
ILLEGAL BEHAVIORS

For more information on behaviors prohibited at school, see the page dealing with student conduct.

IMMUNIZATIONS

State law requires that students attending public schools must be immunized against certain communicable diseases. If you do not meet these requirements, we are forced to exclude you from school until you have had the needed immunizations.

These immunization requirements are available at the main office. You must have on file with the school a medical or immunization record that shows the dates you have had the shots. If you have not had the required immunizations, you must have a medical exemption signed by a physician.

The consequence of these actions will result in disciplinary action, which may include suspension or expulsion from school.

INSURANCE

All participants on rally squads, drill team and athletic teams must have on file with their respective advisor or coach and Athletic Director an Insurance Waiver Form signed by the parent and/or guardian indicating that the student is covered by insurance and has permission to participate. The school does not provide individual accident insurance for students, but a copy of an insurance plan is available in the main office.

L
LIBRARY

The library is a valuable resource we hope you will use often during your time at Columbia High School. It is open from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. every school day. Please feel free to explore the vast array of information stored on its shelves. To avoid overdue book fines, please return materials by the due date.

Students visiting the library without their classes are admitted on a space-available basis, and are required to have a pass from their classroom teacher. Remember that students in the library are there to study, so please keep your voice low and try not to disturb other students. Also, remember that food, drinks and backpacks/bags are not allowed in the library. See the CHS Library page for more information.

LOCKERS

Students can pick lockers at a designated time each spring. Otherwise a locker will be assigned to you at registration in the fall. If you do not have a lock, one will be provided for you from the office, at a cost of $3.00. If you bring your own lock we need the combination or a key in the office.
Lockers are the property of Columbia High School, loaned to students for their convenience. All lockers are subject to search as per RCW 28A.600.230. Should no key be available, locks will be cut.
You are responsible for keeping your locker clean and locked. Report broken lockers to the main office. We assume no responsibility for items lost from your locker, so keep them locked! Avoid bringing valuable items to school and keep your locker combinations confidential.

PAMPHLETS AND POSTERS

The principal must approve any pamphlets; posters and other published materials brought to school or posted on the school bulletin board or school property

PHONE CALLS AND STUDENT MESSAGES

Our main office is a busy place and it is hard for our staff to take messages for 450 students. Because of the numerous phone calls, we will only take student messages from parents or guardians. We also urge parents to restrict those messages to unusual or unforeseen reasons so we are not deluged with phone calls. This allows us to keep class interruptions and office disruption to a minimum. The phone in the office is strictly for business purposes. Students may use the pay phone in "A" Court but only during their passing periods or lunchtime.

PORTABLE RADIO/CASSETTE SYSTEMS

Use of portable radio/cassette/disc systems is allowed only in specific classrooms and only at the individual teacher's discretion. The only music that will be allowed in common areas is that of the stereo purchased by the ASB, which will be available before school and at lunch in "A" court.

R
REPORT CARDS

Our school year is divided into two 18 week semester with four 9 week quarters. Progress reports will be distributed approximately half way through each quarter. Progress report cards are given at the end of the 1st and 3rd quarters, and final semester report cards are issued at the end of the 2nd and 4th quarters. Only these semester reports are recorded as part of a student's permanent record.

Only organizations authorized by the ASB may sell on school property or at school events.

S
SELLING ITEMS AT SCHOOL

Only organizations authorized by the ASB may sell on school property or at school events.

SEXUAL HARASSMENT

It is the policy of the White Salmon School District to protect the rights of the individual concerning all types of discrimination; racial, ethnic, sexual or any other identified form of discrimination will not be tolerated.

Definition - Sexual Harassment is defined as unwelcome sexual advances for sexual favor and other unwelcome verbal or physical sexual oriented advances or conduct received by one student from another student in the course of a student's education in school, on the school bus, or at school sponsored or related activities. Conduct is viewed as sexual harassment when it has the purpose or effect of unreasonably interfering with a student's school performance or creates an intimidating, hostile, or offensive environment.

Corrective Action - If a student believes he/she is the victim of sexual harassment, he/she should tell the offender to stop the activity. This is the first step toward resolution. If the victim is uncomfortable or cannot initiate this action or if the offender persists, a student should immediately report the violation to a teacher, counselor or administrator. An investigation must be conducted within 48 hours of the reported incident and a report rendered shortly after.

STUDENT ATTENDANCE

The White Salmon School District will comply with the state law that requires all public schools to report the number of excused and unexcused absences each year. For more information on attendance requirements, see the Student Attendance page.

STUDENT BEHAVIOR EXPECTATIONS

Throughout your education you will make many choices. As a CHS student you are part of a tradition in which students take pride in planning their education as they prepare for college, community college, vocational training or job entry. In addition, students make important choices about participation in the many Bruin activities and athletic programs.

You also choose the behavior to use when you communicate with teachers, counselors, administrators and fellow students. Sometimes you may receive guidance from our staff or from fellow students about choosing appropriate behavior. When this happens keep in mind the need to choose behaviors that respect the rights of all students and staff.

Most students make excellent choices and demonstrate model behaviors; but occasionally a student may choose a behavior that interferes with teaching and learning. If you make the wrong choice, then you must be willing to accept the consequences.

We are very proud of you and hope that in your years at CHS you will make wise choices to guarantee success for you and your classmates.

It is a place where problems or questions arising from either the students or the administration can be presented for discussion and consideration. The advisor will schedule ASB general meetings.

We would like to encourage all students to purchase a student body card. The card admits you free to all home athletic events, provides for reduced admission to dances, entitles you to student prices at away athletic events, allows you to make copies in the library of any school materials at no charge, and supports a number of student body activities. We urge you to try your hardest to make sure that record reflects your very best effort.

This record includes the courses you take and the grades you receive your attendance record, discipline record, birth date, parents/guardian names and addresses. STUDENT TRANSFER AND WITHDRAWAL

If you are leaving our school permanently, please check out at our main office. Before you can withdraw from school, a parent or guardian must contact our office. You will then fill out a withdrawal form and pay any debts you may have incurred and your records will be sent to the school you will be attending.

Students who withdraw from school and re-enter at a later date in the semester must attend state-accredited schools to receive credit for time missed at CHS. If the student is not in attendance, he/she will forfeit the opportunity to make up work. Teachers will not pro rate the grades for time missed.

T
TARDY POLICY

At CHS, students are expected to arrive on time for each regularly scheduled class. Tardiness is defined as an unauthorized late arrival to class after the bell has rung. Students who arrive late to class must go to the office and sign in. Students must have a note from their parent and/or guardian at the time they arrive at school, excusing the lateness.

Students will be allowed three (3) unexcused tardies prior to any detention being assigned. The 4th unexcused tardy will result in detention being assigned. Additional unexcused tardies will result in additional detention being assigned for each tardy. Excessive tardies may result in the student serving in school suspension. See classroom procedures for individual teacher's policy.

U
UNEXCUSED ABSENCES

When a student is absent from school or any assigned class they must have a signed note from their parent and/or guardian on the first day they return to school. CONSEQUENCES FOR UNEXCUSED ABSENCES
  1. First unexcused absence: A warning notice will be sent to parents or guardian.
  2. Second unexcused absence: A school administrator will talk to the student and give a verbal warning. A second warning notice will be sent home.
  3. Third unexcused absence: The student will have the choice of serving school detention or working after school around campus equal to the number of school hours missed during the absence. Parent conference is required.
  4. Other unexcused absences: Each subsequent unexcused absence will require a parent conference. In school suspension may result from the 4th unexcused absence.
