Members of the Columbia High School Class of 2008 will be required to meet reading, writing and mathematics standards on the 10th -grade Washington Assessment of Student Learning in order to earn a high school diploma. The bill passed recently in the state legislature contains important features to help students meet that new graduation requirement. Some of the bill's major provisions:

  • Allows students to retake all or portions of the 10th -grade WASL up to four times, beginning in fall 2006 (free retakes for students who do not meet standard; students who meet standard but want to improve scores must pay a fee to retake test)
  • Allows students enrolled in special education programs to pursue an alternate path to a high school diploma by completing requirements of their individual education plans and earning a Certificate of Individual Achievement
  • Requires OSPI to begin developing alternative assessment options or an appeals process that allow students to demonstrate they have met state learning standards
  • Directs OSPI to work with the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges to create options for English language learners to continue work toward a high school diploma in a community college setting
  • Outlines a process for approving any modification to WASL "passing" scores

Test dates for the 2008 WASL have been set by the state Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction. Modifications or variationsfrom that schedule, if any, will be announced prior to the test dates. Test dates for subsequent years are also avaiable at the OSPI site.
