Welcome to Whitson Elementary School

Whitson Elementary is a kindergarten through 4th grade school with approximately 450 students. Our building is a Schoolwide Title I Program in which federal funds are being used to support high quality education for all students. The emphasis is child-centered with a teacher-facilitated approach to learning.

Our vision statement

Whitson Elementary School follows developmentally appropriate practices. This creates a child-centered environment which encourages children to develop the knowledge, skills and attitude that are the foundation for becoming life-long learners and contributing members of our world community.

Our curriculum

Whitson Elementary School emphasizes the growth of the whole child. The curriculum includes seven basic areas of childhood development:

  1. Personal and Social Development
  2. Language and Literacy
  3. Mathematical Thinking
  4. Scientific Thinking
  5. Social Studies
  6. The Arts
  7. Physical Development

Our common Focus: Increasing Literacy

We are committed to bring all students to grade level in reading and writing across all curriculum areas through the use of a research-based literacy model. Our goal is for all students to meet the state standards in reading, writing, and mathematics on the Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL). We want our students to see themselves as capable learners and to believe in themselves enough to try new things without fear.
