Human beings have always been social animals. From the earliest of times, human groups formed as small nomadic cultures, traveling from place to place in search of food, clothing and shelter. In a harsh and often confusing world, these groups offered their members a sense of belonging and security. Life may have been difficult, primitive, and short, but at least the groups formed provided some measure of security and society for those that were able to join them.

Over time, as these wandering groups discovered ways to settle down and they grew in size and complexity, they formed what became known as civilizations . In many ways, the move from culture to civilization marked a profound change in the ways humans lived and worked with each other. This unit investigates the achievements of the earliest civilizations in the development of World History, with a special focus on the civilizations of the Nile, Tigris-Euphrates, Indus, and Huang-He Rivers.
