A Message from Dale Palmer

It is a busy time in your schools as the WASL (Washington Assessment of Student Learning) tests are currently being administered. Students are very engaged as they work hard to demonstrate what they have learned. Testing will continue for the rest of this week with make-up tests being administered the first week in May.

The Debbie McNamara Living Memorial Wall was dedicated this past fall at the first home football game. Debbie, who passed away in August of 2002, was a long-time teacher in the White Salmon School District. Nominations are now being accepted for other names to be placed on this wall located on the new Bruin Football Stadium. Potential honorees will be nominated by or to our committee by June 1 of each year. We will limit honorees to a maximum of two per year. Some years we will no doubt have two new names to add and other years one or maybe even no new names to add. Names will be added at the first home football game next fall. There are six criteria to meet to have a name placed upon this prestigious wall. They are as follows:

  • This is a Living Memorial; therefore, the nominated person may be living or deceased.
  • The person needs to have been involved with the school district from 1974 forward since Debbie began teaching at Columbia High School in 1974.
  • The person needs to have demonstrated at least 15 years of service with the school district.
  • We will be taking nominations for people within the White Salmon School District boundaries.
  • Most importantly, the committee will be looking at the extra-curricular activities of the nominee, not just coaching, but activities with kids above and beyond the "normal work day".
  • The nominee does not necessarily need to be a teacher.

Please call the school district office (493-1500) by June 1, 2004, to nominate a person for this Living Memorial Wall.

Parents and community members are invited to an Open House beginning in Columbia High School's gymnasium at 7 p.m., Tuesday, May 11, to learn about Washington State's new graduation requirements. This is particularly important for parents of current 8 th grade students. The State Board of Education will require that all-incoming 9 th graders (this year's 8 th grade students) meet new Washington State graduation requirements by the time they graduate in 2008. The new requirements include achieving state and district credits for competencies, earning a certificate of academic achievement, completing educational plans, and a culminating project. All parents of current 8 th grade students, as well as other interested individuals, should plan on attending this very important Open House.
